Richard MOREAU

Since January 1, 2024, Dr. Richard MOREAU is Director of the European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure (EF CLIF), Barcelona, Spain. He is also Emeritus Senior Scientist at the INSERM (French NIH), Paris, both in France.

He obtained his MD degree in 1983 at the University of Paris, France. From 1983 to 1996, he was full-time physician at Intensive Care Units from Ile-de-France hospitals. In 1996, he joined the Liver Unit at Beaujon hospital (Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP), Clichy) as Consultant in Hepatology and got the position of Senior Scientist at the INSERM, and Principal Investigator at the INSERM Department located at Beaujon Hospital and involved in research on Liver Diseases.

His main research interest is pathophysiology and treatment of complications of cirrhosis, in particular acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). In 2009, he was among the European hepatologists who created the EASL-Chronic Liver-CLIF Consortium, which is fully dedicated to research on cirrhosis. He was Principal Investigator of the first study (CANONIC study) performed under the umbrella of the EASL-CLIF Consortium. This prospective study enrolled 1343 patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis admitted to 29 liver units from 8 European countries. The CANONIC study provided an evidence-based definition for ACLF (Gastroenterology 2013;144:1426-37). He was also co-Principal Investigator (with Prof Flair Carrilho) of the ACLARA study that recruited 1274 patients
