Patrick MARCELLIN

Professor Emeritus of Hepatology at the University of Paris, Hôpital Beaujon, APHP, Paris, France

Patrick MARCELLIN is Professor Emeritus of Hepatology at the University of Paris. He earned his medical degree from the University of Paris and undertook postgraduate training in both internal medicine and gastroenterology-hepatology at the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP). 
Professor MARCELLIN completed research fellowships in immunology (College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, New York City, USA) and virology (Institut Pasteur, Paris). He also holds a PhD in virology.
Since 1984, he has been actively involved in laboratory and clinical research on viral hepatitis and liver diseases. His major focus has been on viral hepatitis therapy, and as such he has been the principal investigator on initial trials of first interferons and antivirals and was principal investigator of several pivotal studies investigating therapies for chronic hepatitis B and C. He published more than 500 articles among the best journals (NEJM, Lancet, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, J Hepatol…) (H-index 130).
Professor MARCELLIN was a member of the Scientific Committee of EASL and organized the first EASL Consensus Conferences: the one on Hepatitis C in 1999 and the one on Hepatitis B in 2002. He organized and chaired the first EASL guidelines: the guidelines on hepatitis B in 2004. He received the EASL Recognition Award in 2020.

He was vice-president of the Paris region global competitiveness cluster for innovative technologies for health and new therapies (MEDICEN).He was the founder and president of the French National hepatitis network (FPRH).

He is the founder and President of the Association for the Promotion of Hepatic Care (APHC) that has organized the annual international Paris Hepatitis Conference (PHC) since 2004.
